How to harrow & level your paddock for less!

paddock chain harrow Unfortunately we need to regularly harrow paddocks to keep them well maintained, because as any farmer will tell you, horses churn up the ground! Yes, but we love them anyway so we just have to try to deal with it. On a limited budget (and with limited storage), I couldn’t really afford a large set of

. However, years previously, I’d seen someone simply towing a metal gate behind a four wheel drive to level an arena and the paddock. Excellent idea!

metal field gate I got straight onto eBay and managed to get the bargain of the century – a brand new 6 foot metal

for £1!!! OK, so I had to pay postage which added to the cost, but this was still lots cheaper than if I’d gone to my local supplier. I simply attached rope to the

and tow it around the field with my four wheel drive (you could of course do the same thing with a sit on mower, ATV or tractor). This really has made a difference and is so easy and quick to do. Not only that, I store the gate upright against my hay store so it takes up hardly any room and is safer for the horses, than having a set of

lying on the ground.

Of course, if you have a bigger budget and more storage space, there are some great paddock maintenance stores which sell every type of paddock maintenance equipment you could imagine, from

, fertiliser spreaders to ATV's and menage levellers.
